Measure, a leading international provider of aerial intelligence, has completed a drone flight in the DC Metropolitan Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ) as a result of a waiver granted by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Systems Operations Security unit.
Washington DC’s FRZ was put in place in 2007 and prohibits aviation operations outside of the Department of Defense and other government agencies. To obtain a waiver to fly within the FRZ, Measure’s drone pilots passed a background check from The Department of Homeland Security and the local law enforcement agency. The request was to take aerial footage of a construction site in Silver Spring, Maryland, a suburb of Washington DC, just within DC FRZ 3.
“Measure continues to be aggressive in pushing the boundaries of what is possible. If you are a company within the Washington DC metropolitan area, you are restricted in your ability to use drone technology to serve your business needs,” explains Brandon Torres Declet, Measure’s CEO. “This waiver signifies the FAA’s confidence in the integrity of Measure’s operations. We will build upon this successful operation and continue to increase flight operations for clients in the DC FRZ and restricted airspace around the nation.”

The original waiver was granted by the FAA, followed by an additional 3-month waiver extension, also granted by the FAA.
“It’s nice to be able to work effectively with the FAA,” Ronney Miller, Senior Director of Aviation Standards, and the Pilot in Command for the FRZ mission, reflects. “As a huge supporter of unmanned aircraft vehicle safety standards and practices, we are pleased to be able to complete a safe and legal operation.”
